DARK MIRROR
This mirror came about partly as a response to seeing the distant reflection of a young woman in the mirror of IRON GENIE, and partly out of an exercise in TIG Welding.
And also out of a particular darkness of mood.
The frame is a solid hunk of Steel, its surface distressed, like the precious grey Palladium Leaf applied to the back of the glass using a technique called Verre Eglomise. There are three layers of glass, the central layer of Broken Shards of glass protected between two others.
I wanted something heavy, eternal, and slightly menacing. I wanted the mirror itself to be deep and troubled, so that you see yourself and your environment distantly through an archeology of broken strata and fragmented texture.
REFLECTIVE, in many senses of the word.
The top images show it installed with shaped zinc ETCHING PLATES and hung with steel chains next to Iron Genie.
