HEXAGONAL TILINGS are ubiquitous in nature, being the most economic solution to packing similar elements together - as in, for example, the cells of a honeycomb.
I developed some TESSELLATED SURFACE DESIGNS based on simple hexagonal tilings worked up on isometric paper. I used these designs as the basis for experiments with surface structures, exploring ways of imparting added dimensionality to the flat hexagonal format.
Hexagonal forms also work successfully with ORIGAMI planar foldings, creating fascinating surface structures, bringing in the added dimensions if light and shadow.
